Petras Repšys’s fresco The Seasons (1986) at Vilnius University is one of the most frequently viewed and admired works of Lithuanian art of the 20th century. In this informational booklet we seek to acquaint our university guests, students and employees with the author of this work and the various themes and subjects depicted in the fresco. Every fragment of the fresco is enumerated and described. The text is richly illustrated with photographs.

Repšys’s artistic style is unique and is often attributed to magical realism. In their intricacy of detail, fantastic imagery, depictions of rituals, and illustrations of religious concepts, his works remind us of those of the 16th-century Dutch painters Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The deep symbolic meanings in his art hearken back to the ancient civilizations. The art of the Baroque Era (late 16th – beginning of the 18th centuries), characterized by intense plasticity, theatricality, and the combining of various branches of art into a whole is also very close to Repšys.
