Riga Photography Biennial is an international contemporary art event that focuses on photography as an artistic practice, and prioritises Latvia, the Baltic and European regions in particular. The first Riga Photography Biennial 2016 is dedicated to geopolitical characteristics of these regions, revealing them through an intertwined motif of memory, dreams and reality. Simultaneously it poses questions about the role and significance of image in the space of contemporary art and everyday life, striving to understand how our appreciation of photography and its presence in works of art has changed during the past few years. The programme of Riga Photography Biennial 2016 spanned several months, offering a mix of exhibitions, lectures, creative workshops, presentations and symposium in Riga and other cities across Latvia. The accompanying publication reflects on the eclectic range of events that the Riga Photography Biennial 2016 has offered and, through in-depth interviews, essays and articles, documents the diverse changes that image culture has been subjected to over the past few years, whilst all along encouraging a vigorous exchange of opinions about the possibilities of photography as a multidisciplinary medium of art.
